Safety in Remote Areas
Know how to use your vehicle and engage 4WD. Take spare parts, including a strong jack and two spare tyres.
- Notify a responsible person of your itinerary. Contact this person as you travel.
- Carry adequate supplies of fuel, food and water,
- Take frequent rest breaks and change drivers regularly.
- Caravans - Pull over and give way to local traffic behind you if you are travelling slower than the speed limit,
- Avoid driving at sunrise and sunset when animals are most active.
- Ring Department for Transport Energy and Infrastructure hotline (1300 361 033) for an update on road conditions.
- Avoid travelling in summer when temperatures are extreme- 40 degrees plus.
- Slow down or stop in event of dust storms September - December.
- Leave gates as they were found.

Telecommunications
Mobile phone coverage is limited. Check your supplier for coverage, or ask staff at a Visitor Information Centre. Public phones are common and internet is available in some places but do not assume easy access..
Desert Parks Pass
The Desert Parks Pass includes a permit, handbook, park maps and wildlife information and allows 12 months unlimited access to South Australia's 12 million hectares of desert parks.
You will need one of these to plan your trip to Witjara National Park, Simpson Desert Conservation Park and Regional Reserve and Innamincka Regional Reserve (including Coongie Lakes, Wamba Kadarbu Conservation Park and Lake Eyre National Park).
